Nantandy was born in Abilene,
TX, in 1927, and moved to Ozona, TX, in 1932, where she attended public school.
In 1948 she became a professional artist after having won awards in watercolor,
oils, and drawing, and attending college at NTSU and TWC in Denton, TX, and
San Angelo University, San Angelo, TX. She moved to California in 1960 and
worked for several movies studios and attended Otis Art Institute and USC,
receiving her BFA in 1964. In 1967, while working on her MA in Painting from
CSULB, she taught high school and college. By this time she had invented her
style of structural canvasses and sculpted in various media. She became known
internationally. In 1978 she was awarded her first public commission by the
California State Architect to create a 6' x 72' mural for the EDD building
in San Bernardino, CA.
Nantandy moved to New York in 1981, joined the National Society of Mural Painters,
and began painting autobiographical murals. They were exhibited at the Keane-Mason
Gallery and Studio 54 in 1982. Her San Bernardino Mural was included in the
NSMP Bicentennial Traveling Exhibition form 1984 to 1990. She has continued
to exhibit, winning awards in various mediums. She has had over 50 solo exhibitions
including retrospectives in California, New York, and Texas. Her most recent
honor was inclusion in the permanent collection of the Vay Adam museum in Vaja,
Hungary. She has exhibited in the Westbeth Art Gallery since 1991. Her second
retrospective solo exhibit is scheduled there from April 2 - 24, 2005. All
her friends are invited to attend this gala event.
