Marcos Zimmermann was born in Buenos Aires , Argentina, in 1950. He did Film Studies at the Instituto
Nacional de
Cinematografía in Buenos Aires and started his professional career as a
photographer of feature films. For several years he lived in Rome, where he
worked as a freelance photographer, holding several exhibitions in Europe, including
one in the legendary Delpire-Nouvelle Observateur Gallery of Robert
Delpire, together with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Joseph Koudelka.Since
1989 he has worked on the publication of books of photographs which inquire
into the identity of his country. These include: "Patagonia, A Place in
the Wind"; "Río de la Plata, River of Dreams"; "Northern
Argentina, Land and Kin"; "Argentina, Nature for the Future",
among others. These books have made Marcos Zimmermann one of the most important
figures in Argentine photography at the moment.Photographs of his are included
in the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Collection for the Televisa Foundation in Mexico,
in the collection directed by John Szarkowski for the Paine Webber Group of New
York, in the art collection of the Huston Museum of Arts, in the Bank of
America art collection of New York, in the Cabinet des Estamps et de la
Photographie of the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, in the Fundación Antorchas
of Buenos Aires as well as in many private collections. He has been awarded a
prize for the Best Argentine Art Book, as well as the Pirámide de Oro and
Leonardo prizes. In 1999 his work was included in the patrimony of the
Argentine National Museum of Fine Arts and the Modern Art Museum of the city of
Buenos Aires.He is currently working on three new books and has been invited
to put on an exhibition in the Shaday Gallery of Tokyo by the Japanese master
Eikoh Hosoe. The Folio Gallery of Alberta, Canada, is currently preparing a
monographic volume on his work.
